MEET THIS YEAR'S COMPETITORS

Mr. Craig

[Editor’s Note: This was submitted to us by Mr. Craig because he “wants to make sure you don’t screw this up.”]

Mr. Craig is a six-time champion of the Boulder Canyon Cannonball competition, and he’s going for lucky number seven this year. The Tom Brady of cannonballs, Mr. Craig knows that cannonballery isn’t an art, it’s a science. It’s all about getting the correct angles and velocity. It’s about science, geometry, and preparation.

“’By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail’

– Benjamin Franklin”

- Mr. Craig

But Mr. Craig isn’t just a cannonball competition dominator. He’s an enigma. A myth. A legend. People often ask: is Craig his first name or last? According to him, “You can just call me Mr. Craig.”

Mr. Craig is a proud graduate of Boulder Canyon Elementary School, Geo. Koch Middle School, Boulder Canyon High School, and holds a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from BCU (‘13) and a Masters in Aquatic Engineering from BCU (‘15). Mr. Craig was a protege of the late Bill Koch, the engineer who created the dam that saved Boulder Canyon from constant flooding, allowing the town to flourish once again.

Mr. Craig’s Profession is engineering. His passion is dominating kids in the annual cannonball competition. His perfect princess is his cat, Betsy Ross.

He requests that you follow him on "the socials":

Favorite Color: Red, like my favorite tracksuit

Favorite Food: My 12-minute brisket

Favorite non-cannonball dive: Who wastes the energy on anything other than perfecting their cannonball?

Favorite Subject in School: Winning

[Extra Editor’s Note: As Hoosiers, we agree with Mr. Craig’s self-assessment as the Tom Brady of cannonballs. By that we mean he’s very skilled, always wins, and we can’t help but loathe him for it.]

"Little Ricky" Schwartz

Ricky is a recent graduate of Boulder Canyon Elementary School and will be attending Geo. Koch Middle School in the fall. During his illustrious Elementary School Career, Ricky was recognized for his studiousness, kindness, and leadership.

An accomplished Boy Scout, we asked Ricky how he felt about this year’s competition and this was his reply: “The best part of the competition is the fun we all have together. Though my friends and I are all a little tired of Mr. Craig winning every year.”

Future Occupation: Carpenter

Favorite Food: Burgers and hot dogs

Favorite non-cannonball dive: The Can Opener

Favorite Subject in School: History

Dee Ann Huebschman

Dee Ann is a student at Boulder Canyon Elementary. When she’s not working on new cheers, you can usually find her practicing her backflips in gymnastics class. While she clocks in as the youngest competitor, it’s best not to count Dee Ann out.

“A Great cannonball is all about the perfect jump. As a cheerleader and gymnast, I can outjump anyone in the field, especially Mr. Craig.”

Future Occupation: Accountant

Favorite Food: Donut with sprinkles

Favorite non-cannonball dive: Backflip

Favorite Subject in School: Language Arts

[Fun Fact: Dee Ann has attended the Annual Cannonball Competition since she was born, and only ever remembers Mr. Craig winning.]

Elmer Raines

Elmer Raines is a student at Geo. Koch Middle School, and a whiz with a wrench. He started working on boats with his father at the age of 4. Now he runs a small boat repair business during summer break. A natural in the water, Elmer is a star of the Boulder Canyon Aquatic Cacti swim team.

When asked about the competition, Elmer said, “A perfect cannonball is all about understanding how to slice through the water. As a swimmer and a boat technician, I’ve got this competition in the bag.”

Future Occupation: Amusement Park Ride Technician

Favorite Food: Macaroni and Cheese

Favorite non-cannonball dive: Belly Flop

Favorite Subject in School: Shop Class
